Venice Art Biennale 2022 – Australia Pavilion

Marco Fusinato’s DESASTRES, curated by Alexie Glass-Kantor is an experimental noise project that synchronises sound with image and takes the form of a durational solo performance as installation.

Fusinato performed live in the Australia Pavilion for 200 days using an electric guitar as a signal generator into mass amplification to improvise slabs of noise, saturated feedback and discordant intensities that trigger a deluge of images. The resulting all-consuming experience was quite an experience to behold, and with almost 400,000 attendees visiting the pavilion for the 2022 run, proved a massive success.

ArtAV were commissioned to supply and install a huge 12 metre wide and 4.5 metre high, ground-stacked LED wall for the Pavilion, using over 200 of our Unilumin p2.6 LED panels, totalling 54 square metres. Video playback was from custom workstations triggered via midi from Fusinato's guitar. StageSmarts intelligent power distro provided all our power needs and Novastar H5 processors looked after the 9 million pixels. A remote access solution enabled us to monitor the system from the UK, the show ran flawlessly across the exhibition run with minimal assistance required from our team.

Transporting 3500kg on and off a Venice canal barge is certainly a challenge, but one we have experience of dealing with at the Biennale. ArtAV provide a complete service at Venice, from shipping, customs clearance, and local transportation, through to installation, de-rig and returns at the end of the exhibition. Overall this was a fantastic installation that was a pleasure to work on with Marco and the team at the Australia Council for the Arts and we hope to work with them again in future.
