ArtAV, a leading specialist in audiovisual installation, recently collaborated with Smoking Dogs Films and Lisson Gallery to expertly oversee and finalize the installation of renowned artist John Akomfrah's powerful work, "Four Nocturnes," at the prestigious Völklinger Hütte in Germany. This significant installation forms part of the thought-provoking "True Size of Africa" exhibition.
Völklinger Hütte, a remarkable UNESCO World Heritage Site and the world's only completely preserved ironworks, provided a unique and impactful backdrop for Akomfrah's immersive video installation.
This project marks another successful collaboration for ArtAV with "Four Nocturnes," having previously handled its debut in Venice (2019) and a subsequent installation in Chicago at Wrightwood 659. Our deep understanding of the artwork's technical nuances ensured a seamless integration within the challenging industrial environment of Völklinger Hütte.
The specific requirements for this installation focused on achieving optimal visual and auditory impact within the vast repurposed Pig Iron Shed. Our expert team meticulously colour-matched the projectors to ensure visual consistency and precisely adjusted the picture to best represent the artistic vision of "Four Nocturnes."
The audio design presented a particular challenge due to the expansive metal and concrete exhibition space and its inherent acoustics. ArtAV dedicated significant time to the Digital Signal Processing (DSP) to craft a robust and immersive soundscape. Working closely with the skilled on-site technical team, we successfully achieved a rich, warm, and powerful audio output that effectively brought the artwork to life within the monumental space.
