Heather Phillipson ‘Dream Land’ – Cooper Gallery, Art Night Dundee

From a technical point ArtAV worked very closely with Heather Phillipson to find an appropriate material for both the Cooper Gallery main space installation and the Upper Foyer. For Heather’s vision it was important to her that the projections in the Cooper Gallery were visible beyond the screen material and onto the wall but that the material was dense enough that the image could be seen clearly on the fabric. After several tests with sample material a Sharkstooth gauze was used for the exhibition. Due to the floating nature of the screens and the movement the artist wanted to incorporate it was important that the material could be moved by fans. In the Upper Foyer space a different material was required that had similar characteristics but also would provide a good shadow for a performance from behind the screen during Art Night. For this element  a Voile was used with a particular density to give Heather the effect she wanted.

Epson EB-PU1007B Laser Projectors were used in both spaces for both works, their fantastic colour reproduction and ability to be colour matched, as well as the extensive lens suite we stock made them the best choice for the multi-projection work. For the Cooper Gallery the narration of the work was particularly important, to give it the best possible opportunity to flourish in a space with limited acoustic treatment some of our Genelec 8330 SAM Loudspeakers were used. A great speaker with a wonderful warm tone that is particularly good at reproducing the intricacies of the soundscape specifically designed for this exhibition.

In the Upper Foyer space Heather wanted to create a speaker with a specific aesthetic similar to that of a tower speaker from the 90’s; yet still keep a very good audio reproduction, familiar with the Yamaha HS8i’s that have been used on her Tate shows ArtAV and the team at the Cooper Gallery designed and built custom plinths to house a stack of HS8i. They have proven to be such a hit aesthetically that we are thinking of making them a permanent choice in our rental stock.
